21st Annual Turkey Trot “Give To Run”

Regarding the Changes to the Turkey Trot “Give to Run” 5k
As the BRC Turkey Trot enters the 21st year we want to take a moment and share some recent events which resulted in the unavoidable change of venue and distance. The current board of directors was presented with a dilemma this year, related to location and permitting, and in doing so, had to make a decision to either skip a year, cancel the race or make the best of the situation. We chose the latter. To help our dedicated and loyal runners better understand the change, we would like to be very clear about the genesis of the problem. Please keep in mind that the race in past years has grown significantly and hosts 1000 runners plus spectators and volunteers.
Why was the race moved?
Simply put, the City of Bradenton would not approve our permit to hold the 5 mile run at the previous location, near De So Memorial National Park. In past years, we were granted a significant amount of exemption from most of the permitting requirements. Due to the growth of participants, we were informed that we would be expected to adhere to ALL permitting guidelines. In the end, the answer was that the permit request for the previous location would not be approved for 2018.
Why is the race being held at GT Bray Park?
Several locations and options were considered and evaluated over the past year. Our goal was to keep the race in same zip code. We are extremely thankful for the support of the nearby community and recognize that most of the participants come from the nearby 34209 and 34210 zip code. This race has always been located in northwest Bradenton and we want to stay as close to that area as possible. Downtown Bradenton is not currently an option due to a moratorium recently implemented by city officials. (read more here) Because the race is held on the holiday, we are limited to locations and road closures that require additional traffic control, law enforcement and costly public notices.
Why was the distance changed to a 5k instead of a 5 miler?
We recognize that one thing that made this race appealing was the distance and the 1 mile option because it’s different than the traditional 5k that most races offer. However, considering all the other circumstances and challenges presented by moving the race we felt that the established 5k course at GT Bray used for the Canes Classic 5k would be our best option in the interim and allow the race to continue without interruption.
We will continue to consider all options for the Turkey Trot to honor the tradition of this race, while providing a quality venue and optimal course while respecting and working within the limitations of the City and/or County permit and event planning process.
The Bradenton Runners Club is a nonprofit organization that is solely managed by volunteers. Our mission has always been to give back to the running community and Manatee county community. The Turkey Trot in particular donates 100% of the donations to local charities benefiting the hungry and homeless. The Club absorbs all costs associated with the race in order to ensure we can continue to support the charities as in past years.
